Richard,

Nope. You are not in the minority. I always compile natively using a plug farm and distcc. The only kernel I cross compile is this MVEBU kernel (so to be able to compile both Kirkwood and MVEBU kernels at the same time).

IMO, that's not the right way to do it.

In a Linux VM (Ubuntu, for example), you would install Linaro toochain (been too long I need to dig out the notes to see the simple 1 or 2 apt-get commands to do this), and be done with the build environment.

And then set you envs to point to the compiler.

ARCH=arm
CROSS_COMPILE=arm-linux-gnueabihf-

That's it to cross compile the kernel.

Johnei,

As always, you should post the entire serial boot log so I can see the whole picture before the error occurs. Not enoug info when you post a snippet of log.

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! LABEL=rootfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

@bodhi

I think your advise is sound as usual and if I were running a mainline Linux OS where a couple of apt-get's would see me up and running I would probably go that route but compiling / installing everything required to run a Ubuntu KVM is to add more packages to my own system than I want to and generally would mess with my zen. I did compile a bare minimum Qemu for the armhf VM but when that proved unsatisfactory I blew it all away.

I will come back to this but for now with my day job increasingly getting in the way (I know you are very busy too) I think I need to park this until I get back from my extended leave (1st July - 12th August) at which point I might press a spare box into service to act as a build slave for all of this.

Johnei,

This problem is not rootfs lable. Also you have confirmed that you labeled the USB partition correctly. This usually is because of the USB drive and the port that you plug it into.

Quote

I formatted a USB 2.0 stick and gave it an ext3 file system and labeled the stick rootfs

used
Debian-4.12.4-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2

and extracted all the folders and files to the root of the USB stick

then I did the following

cd /media/sda1/boot
cp -a zImage-4.12.4-mvebu-tld-1 zImage
also added the dts file for wdex4100 to dts folder
finally
sync
sync
umount /media/sda1

So double check the root file system, were you root user (not running sudo) when you extract it? (If you had posted the session log above, then I would not need to ask). And then once it's checked out, and you see the same problem, then try using a different USB thumb drive.

I see.

Sounds like a good plan!

One possible way to avoid polluting your system is to use Linux Mint image on USB to boot you x86 laptop/desktop. And do everything on that USB to see if you can install and compile. The kernel is too big a job to compile on USB, but compiling u-boot is quite feasible even using USB rootfs.

Plug your USB drive into a usb2 port and try again.

The kernel log doesn’t show the drive being assigned an sd id.

J,

This box does not have USB 2.0 port. Thus, it is picky about what type of drive you use for USB.

And I don't recall exactly if saschadd has to use which port in that back of the box to boot. The USB port in front might not work for booting.

SD adapter is not a good choice during tests.

Doesn't that mean, it is not using ntfs-3g? Should I install it for better support?

I haven't gotten a chance to do this yet, but I will report back as soon as I get a chance.

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! LABEL=rootfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Johnei,

I don't remember much about this box. So I had to skim through the working thread!

But I do recall that I have built new stock u-boot for it. Found sachadd post:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,34103,35252#msg-35252

The reason I built new stock u-boot because stock u-boot actually stopped the USB drive before the kernel start booting. So that would explain why the USB drive was never power up.

   Loading Kernel Image ... OK
OK
stopping USB..

Starting kernel ...

So like saschadd did before, kwboot with u-boot image U-Boot 2013.01_v1.06 (Jun 30 2017 - 16:08:19) Marvell version: 2014_T3.0p6 - bodhi-tld-6 posted here:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,34103,35230#msg-35230

And enter the same envs you did.

really confused how to run the following line ./kwboot -f -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyAMA0 -b u-boot-a38x-Yellowstone_2014T30p6_bodhi-tld-6-nand-uart.bin -s 0 -q 1
is the file supposed to be on the USB drive somewhere? and I have to have device powered off when sending the command and it should see it when I power it up?

Ok I found info from the forum wiki but when trying to run I get ./kwboot: line 1: syntax error: unexpected ")"
