When you tried to untar Arch on a USB drive, did you make sure that you were root, or sudo root? If you want to run Arch, I would try that again. If you want to run Debian, then try davy's NSA320...

Good question. Most manufacturers will mention it somehow in the product description, though. SLC-NAND is faster, more robust and thus much more expensive than MLC. So it's a feature! Besides that...
